We are a team of St Louis Missouri USA area enthusiasts exploring the history and use of the ancient bast fiber, flax, as a source for fabric. The mission of the Seed To Satchel--Flax to Linen project is to educate by introducing the public to the history and methods of processing an ancient bast fiber once used as the staple for fabric production throughout the world.
This not-for-profit project follows the process of planting flax seeds through to a finished waxed linen and leather satchel. Expected to span about 15 mos. The project includes: flax seed planting, nurture through growing season, harvest, process (ripple, ret, dry, break, scutch, hackle), spin to linen thread, weave to linen fabric, natural dye, oil/wax, combine with leather and handmade metal hardware to finish.
The goal is to chronicle/photograph the process for publication and public education.
